I like how the colours complement one another here. The variety of greens you've captured adds depth by suggesting that there is a lot more to it than just green roots. They all come together to form a whole, and, in this case, I can't help but think of the world and how we often see the world in a spherical shape with space around it.

Quite a profound piece overall.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment !

That was a "metaphorical" view of the Earth, with all the life. Or in my opinion, at least. So I totally understand what you mean about the world. That's very true.

Regarding the green tones, it is actually yellow. I don't like the way it smudges in the black area, but I couldn't fix it in any way sooo...

What do you mean by "a lot more to it than just green roots" ? I'm curious about that.

It is quite a metaphorical viewpoint, you are right there.

It is? That's quite interesting. On my screen, the roots appear to be more green, but there is a green-to-yellow gradient as we move outwards into the background.

Traditional art can be difficult to fix once something is done, depending on the medium.

I just mean that one can glean many different interpretations, possibilities, depth, etc. from this piece. It's not just "green roots" and that's it. There's a lot more to it than that.

I very seldom have the same interpretation/point of view as the audience/a part of the audience. The fact we feel the same way regarding the piece is quite surprising :p

The yellow was supposed to be between the green and the black areas. But it isn't quite obvious, and I failed at that part, somehow ^^

Indeed. Black pastels are super difficult to use, and spread a lot of dust and dirt everywhere. This is the reason of my fail.

Yes, you're right. This is a very vague piece, and could represent almost anything. This is why the audience often project its own feelings on the artwork and link it to an element of its life. That's quite fascinating to witness, and this is why I like drawing "vague" things.
Do you sometimes project your life on the artworks you see ?

Really? I'm surprised to read that. You receive a lot of comments from a variety of people on your work, so I would have thought it would be more frequent. ^^;

Ah, that's fair enough.

It takes time, practice and perseverance. If this is a failure, that only means you will succeed next time (or if not then, then the time after that).

I think it's interesting when the audience projects their own feelings and thoughts onto a piece. In many ways, that is the beauty of artwork, especially with the more abstract/surreal/minimalist pieces.

You and me both! I used to photograph "vague" subject matters and ask my watchers what I had captured. :P

That depends on your definition, I guess. No doubt, I have my own perspective, and I draw from my own experiences, when viewing a piece of artwork.

I guess my point of view isn't so clear and neat, or too "deep" to be reached. Or maybe I don't make sense.. Who knows ? It can be due to a lot of different factors, in the end. But no, the audience isn't often close from what I wanted to share at first. Which isn't a bad thing in the end, since it helps me broaden my horizons with new elements. But it stays quite surprising.

I am quite confident about this all (Do I sound boastful or anything ? :O). As you say, it takes time but in the end, we can all reach our goals. So I don't mind the time spent on the road, if I can reach my destination in the end.

Yep ! We could almost say that art is the mirror of the soul or something like that. It helps me to catch people's personalities and feelings a bit better.

I noticed that ! Your artistic blurs and compositions are "vague", indeed. But I like this type of art better. Surrealism could also be used to create projections because even if shapes and elements are easily recognizable, they are put in a manner where metaphors and interpretations can be seen differently from one person to another. Don't you think ?

That's interesting how humans always base everything on their own points of view and experiences... Even while trying to understand others, we are actually quite selfish in our manner of thinking. Would you say your experiences and projection are a manner to go deeper in an artwork, or are actually preventing you from catching the whole message ? If that makes any sense.

You are right that it could be a lot of different factors. It's hard to say whether it's just one thing or many different things. I don't think it's a bad thing, but...at the same time, it depends. If not one person can understand you as an artist, it's something to think about. :hmm:

Not at all! :D With perseverance, time and more, one can achieve many things. They do say that it's the journey that counts, not the destination.

That is true! I agree. :D

They have a word for it in psychology called "Schema". I wouldn't say it's 'selfish', just how our minds are formed.

I think it is easier to go deeper in an artwork if the concept is more thought-provoking and open. Otherwise, it's not difficult to catch the whole message of a simple piece. At the same time, many things in life are simple, but they are filled with depth if we add our own meaning to things. Life becomes more meaningful if we are the ones that give it meaning.

"If not one person can understand you as an artist, it's something to think about. hmm"
What do you mean ? What should I do ?

I hope what they say is true :p

:)

I've heard about them. Just like "algorithms" to help us deal with our environnement. Right ? But it in the end, one could argue we are shaped in a selfish way.

I see what you mean. What are the conditions so an artwork is 'thought-provoking' to you ?

"at the same time, many things in life are simple, but they are filled with depth if we add our own meaning to things."
That's interesting... In a way, we see symbolism in regular happenings of life, and make it looks a lot more interesting. I think religious people would make a perfect example of the phenomenon : they see manifestations of God within the regular mass of people. What do you think ?

Really ? In my opinion, the colour is a bit off on this one as yellow and black aren't mix together as I would like them to mix... ? I guess it is all a matter of impression, haha ! Thank you !

My twisted inspiration is quite dark actually. I don't know if it is fully obvious in this piece, but I have some very dark corners in my head. What about you ? Do you have a lot of imagination ?

I think the colours are very organic, and the black you say you couldn't quite blend into the yellow, well it looks like rock and I can imagine that these are the roots of a tree and I am looking up at it from a cavern beneath the earth.  wow huh?

Oh this is intriguing. I have a different read on this, The yellows and vivid greens are reminiscent of a young sapling or a seed that just took to life. It occurs to me that seeds only sprout from one or two directions at most when they grow, whereas this here is sprouting from all directions, it has no beginning and no end. Puts me in the mind of a mystical organism that lies in the heart of nature, or maybe it is the heart of nature?

Interesting.... So it is the heart of something...? Why isn't it the thing where the heart lies ? That's surprising.

Do you think it will evolve into something even bigger ?

Hehe it appears it's my turn to apologize for the tardy response.

"Interesting.... So it is the heart of something...? Why isn't it the thing where the heart lies ?"
Well it depends on how you interpret its appearance. It looks as a being made entirely of roots. Roots are a means of feeding the body of which there appears none, so yes, you could reasonably say that there maybe something hidden deep within this amalgamation of roots, but I think it more likely that these roots are feeding Earth itself.

"Do you think it will evolve into something even bigger ?"
Not necessarily, no. If we follow the logic that it's not feeding itself, then it has no business growing bigger, thought it would need to get more intricate and dense to do its job better.

Feeding the Earth ? But roots are usually finding food in the Earth. Why do you see it upside down ?

So, are my trees inefficient or something ? :D
More seriously, I see what you mean. Branches cannot protect something on their own. They need leafs, and all. That's right !

Well roots customarily act as nutrition transporters for the attached stem and leaves. But since neither are present, this no longer follows the logic of standard roots. Add the fact that normal roots only grow downwards, and this chaotic amalgamation of roots growing in every direction start to looks like it's trying to feed earth itself, as it is connected to nothing else. Though perhaps I am grasping for straws there, but I like to think there is purpose even for the most seemingly logic defying things. ^^;

I like your point of view ! Nothing looks logical here, indeed ! I didn't think of that in that way, but I am happy it turned out that way in your mind ! I like defying logic...

In the end, we need more information in order to say if these roots are good for the earth or not, right ?

Yes, we can agree on that point. The static nature of the drawing doesn't divulge enough information to guess one way or the other. Although I will note that "roots" are rarely the bearers of ill fortune.

Greetings from :iconprojectcomment:

I just went on and read about the contest. That looks fun! Now I'm very intrigued. So this is the memory of trees, yes? I wonder what your intentions were with this piece. Do you know a Japanese manga artist named Osamu Tezuka? He created astro boy and all the classic, and he's like our national treasure. But one of his stories was called Mistune ga Tooru, about this boy who has the third eye and he has some creepy super intelligence because he has the skill of the ancient civilization. This one really reminded me of that story. There is this really dark something underground, and it reaches out through cracks and any openings on the ground surfaces to swallow people. It's probably because the image if framed with such dark colour, I got that impression. In a way, it goes with your title because I think the thing was killing humans because humans were bad for the Earth. It makes me wonder if these trees you drew are pro or con humans. I like the way they are knotted together in the centre as if they are fighting together. It's not an easy theme, so I think you did create something very interesting based on the contest.

As for constructive comment, I guess right now it doesn't pop as much as it could and without knowing the contest, people may be confused as to what you are trying to create. But then again, it is classified as surreal drawing, so that's okay. If I were you, I may just change the colour, especially the yellow so that green trees in the middle could pop more? Otherwise, I think it's a great concept.

Hello again !

Yes, this contest's theme was quite difficult to figure out and to achieve, because it is a rather abstract theme. You can put absolutely anything behind it, so I had some struggle with the piece.

I don't know the manga. I should certainly check it out ! However, I see what you mean with the opposition earth/humans. I think these trees could be against humans, yes.

"As for constructive comment, I guess right now it doesn't pop as much as it could and without knowing the contest"
Yes, it is because of the dry pastels... Yellow wasn't blending well with black, so I had to put more and more yellow, ending up covering a good part of the trees. I think it wasn't a good idea to blend yellow with black.

"
without knowing the contest, people may be confused as to what you are trying to create"
That's true, but how to improve on that ?

Thank you for the great comment !

Ooh, I did read about that contest too! I hope I'll be able to join too!
This looks like a good interpretation to me, with great transposition in artwork too.

I really like the colours above all, the yellow and green are very peaceful, and they make the picture work, because all the entanglement of roots and branches, could have resulted in a "strangling" feeling. Luckily it's not the case, with such a bright green and yellow, it looks like the embodiement of life.
To me, it also looks like it might have a double interpretation. It may look like the earth covered in very big trees, or a globe of light underground, like an unborn tree that will bring life to the earth. Either way, it's a great feeling.

There's really nothing that looks wrong with it to me, apart from the fact that maybe I would have liked to see some leaves, and maybe some diversity in the colour of different trunks/roots. But maybe they wouldn't make sense with the second interpretation, so...

I really like how this turned out, best wishes for the contest! ^^

Hello !

I see what you mean regarding the stifling roots. I am glad it doesn't look that way, because I wanted to show the contrary ^^

An unborn tree ? That's interesting ! I didn't think about that. My intention was to create the Earth covered in trees, but the light globe is quite interesting as well, as if something was going to happen. I guess there is no real answer, and we can imagine whatever we want

Mmmh.. Yes, but I wanted to create harmony between the trees, so adding different ones would have created some confusion. As for the leaves, I don't know why, but I didn't want to add any. Torturing branches are always great to draw, so maybe that's why ^^

Thank you ! Best wishes to you as well, if you decide to enter it !
